I spent the last weekend with 3 of my favorite ELFs visiting Belitung, an island east of Sumatera that’s known as the setting for the popular Indonesian film “Laskar Pelangi” (Rainbow Troops). We chose this location because ELF Adam and ELF Maura have been singing the theme song from “Laskar Pelangi” at karaoke joints all over Indonesia for the past 10 months, but it was really just an excuse to get together one last time before we all leave Indonesia in June.
We strolled the beaches, got a driving tour of the island, and sat and talked and talked and talked. We also hired a boat and guide to take us to some surrounding islands for swimming and picnicking. It was all great fun and it also got me on 5 more islands, bringing my grand total to 16 islands visited. Not bad considering most people only visit 1 island (that being Bali), but not all that impressive given that Indonesia has over 17,000 islands. That’s a lot of islands, and I didn’t even hit 1/1000th of them. Aduh! (That roughly translates to “yikes!” )
